Evidence management of self collected items

The chain of custody begins with the victim who gives evidence to a health care provider or law enforcement officer, who continues the chain. The courts use the chain linkages to ensure the integrity of evidence. In health care settings, the patient is the first possessor of evidence in the chain of custody. An underlying assumption in health care settings is that the patient will tell the truth because the health care provider relies on the patient’s history of events to create a treatment plan.
