Lawsuit Aims Eastern Michigan Title IX; Former Director Rejects the Claim

Eleven women say they were touched without consent, raped while they sobbed, and assaulted while they pleaded “no.” And they say Eastern Michigan University’s response was to cover it up, block their transcripts, ignore a Title IX report, and advise them not to go to police. 

A Title IX lawsuit filed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Michigan by the women lists a slew of alleged failings by the Ypsilanti university. EMU, however, has countered a number of the claims amid a Detroit Free Press investigation of reported assaults at the school. 

The Free Press investigation and the women’s legal action come as four former students were charged in the last year in connection to reported assaults during their time at the university. Each man is implicated, if not charged, in incidents with more than one woman.
